Mesa Verde National Park

You need to wait for me to get home so you can feel my sweaty palms as I talk about getting to and from this place.  The road up the mesa to Far View Village was absolutely terrifying.  It is 15 miles of cliff hanging switchbacks to gain an elevation of 8000. You are on top of the mesa and can see over 200 miles.  The famous cliff dwellings are on ledges under overhangs so were too shadowed for photos.  But there are lots to see.  Today I left at 7:00 to be as alone as possible driving back down.  The road is very narrow and I wanted it all to myself.  Enjoy the visitor just in front of my room balcony.  The most interesting are the excavations of pit houses and kivas which are along the scenic road at the top.  In 2003 a fire burned 50% of the mesa top.  Gives you pause when you try to imagine an evacation down the road.
