Death Valley National Park

Very

Arrived yesterday after a drive through the Mojave National Preserve.  Right through the Mojave Desert.  Very interesting high desert especially the cinder cone mounds the remains of volcanic activity.  Yes that is a Joshua Tree in the foreground of the cone.  Today I began at Badwater salt flats 189 ft below sea level and ended up at Scotty's Castle at 3000 ft above sea level.  The distance was about 75 miles by road.  In between of special interest was the Devil's Golf Course.  So named because only the devil could play there amongst the salt rocks which are hard and sharp.  Also along the way was a 9 mile one way steep winding road up and into the mountains called Artists Drive.  So named for the palette of colors in the rocks.  I think I finally figured this place out.  It is a valley between two mountain ranges.  Eons ago there was one mountain range.  When the earth's plates shifted the mountain split.  One side pushed down on the other creating two mountain halves with a valley in between.  Again I turned to a picture book to supplement my photos. See what I had to pay for gas today!

  1. Death valley - Does that mean death by gasoline prices? I hope you are enjoying the warmth. It was cold & damp here.

  2. Wow! Looking at those gas prices makes me glad we're not driving to Alaska this year!
